Steven "Dok" Randle

Steven I. Randle was born and raised in Vicksburg, Ms.  His passion for writing starting at a young age, but the depth and crux of his words came after leaving the University of Southern Mississippi in a way that did not include a cap...or a gown.  His writing reflects real life in a very 'in your face', 'no holds barred' manner.  Whether in the genre of poetry, spoken word, or a variety of prose, Steven paints a portrait of the essence of reality in all of its splendor and grit.

“Essence of Carpe Diem”

For Time has no respect or love for love.

In Time all cherished things shall drift away.

Mine eyes doth blink the changing stars above.

And Seasons come and go with dews of day.

What thing will boldly halt the hands that fly? Such heroes only come with tales and dreams. As if sea serpents soon reside in skies. And birds were born to navigate the streams.

So woe is he who fails to come to see.

The tribulations that force one to live.

For death will rise as waters leap the sea

And life that halts was never yours to give.

Beauty and wisdom come to those who know

That time lives on beyond the lives below.

Nowitzki, Mavs Take Big Honors at ESPY Awards

LOS ANGELES -- The Dallas Mavericks made a haul at the ESPYs on Wednesday night.

Dallas Mavericks Dirk Nowitzki accepts the award for Best Male Athlete at the ESPY Awards on Wednesday, July 13, 2011, in Los Angeles. (AP Photo/Matt Sayles)

The NBA champions won best team, Dirk Nowitzki won Best Male Athlete and Best NBA Player and Rick Carlisle won best Coach/Manager.

"I'm so humbled and honored by this," Nowitzki said. "It's been an unreal year for all of us on the Mavericks."

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban added: "We had a great time and are glad we won, but the biggest deal was when my daughter met Selena Gomez."

The Mavericks weren't the only NBA players cleaning up. Blake Griffin won the ESPY for Breakthrough Athlete.

Griffin, the NBA's rookie of the year, filled highlight reels with an assortment of spectacular dunks. He averaged 22.5 points and 12.1 rebounds a game and became the first rookie to appear in an NBA All-Star Game since Yao Ming in 2003.

Blake Griffin

Saturday Night Live comedian Seth Meyers hosted the show for a second straight year. He opened the telecast by joking about the NFL and NBA lockouts before taking some digs at the Miami Heat. He then cracked some jokes about Giants closer Brian Wilson's unique outfit choice.

Brian Wilson

The always eccentric Wilson would have won the award for best dressed athlete, had there been one. All eyes were on Wilson as he walked down the red carpet in a full-body spandex tuxedo, complete with black high-tops and a cane.

"Justin Bieber could have set himself on fire and not have had a crazier outfit than Brian Wilson," Meyers told reporters.

Fan voting determined the winner of the ESPY for Best Play. The honor went to Abby Wambach of the U.S. soccer team for her overtime goal that tied Brazil in the quarterfinals of the Women's World Cup. The Americans advanced on penalty kicks and, after Wednesday's win over France, will play Japan in Sunday's final.

The Arthur Ashe Award for Courage was presented to Dewey Bozella, who was sent to prison in 1983 for a murder he did not commit but won his release in 2009.

Other winners at the ESPYs:

• Boston Bruins goalie Tim Thomas won Best Championship Performance for helping his team to the Stanley Cup championship. Thomas stopped 238 of Vancouver's 246 shots as Boston won in seven games.

"It's been a month, but it still really hasn't sunk in what it means to the city and whole New England area," Thomas said.

• Reigning Olympic downhill champion and three-time overall World Cup ski champion Lindsey Vonn won Best Female Athlete.

Vonn professed to having "Bieber Fever" during her acceptance speech.

"Justin Bieber, will you take a picture of me for my Facebook page?" she asked the pop star as he sat in the audience.

• BYU's Jimmer Fredette, who led the nation in scoring with 28.5 points a game, won Best Male College Athlete. Fredette was drafted ninth by the Charlotte Bobcats, who then traded his rights to the Sacramento Kings.

• Anthony Robles of Arizona State won the NCAA wrestling championship despite being born with one leg. He was the recipient of the Jimmy V Award and the Best Male Athlete with a Disability.

• The Philadelphia Eagles' 38-31 victory over the New York Giants was named Best Game. In a the December game at New Meadowlands Stadium, the Eagles scored 28 points in the final seven minutes, 18 seconds to take first place from the Giants in the NFC East.

• The VCU men's basketball team won Best Upset. VCU defeated heavily favored Kansas 71-61 to reach the Final Four.

• Super Bowl MVP Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers won Best NFL Player.

"I'm very happy to win but I would really like to focus on us as a team," the quarterback said. "I was brought up to be humble and that's how I live my life. I'm glad I won but I didn't do it alone."

• Pitcher Roy Halladay of the Philadelphia Phillies won Best MLB Player. Halladay also won the ESPY for Best Moment.

• Five-time Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson won Best Driver.

• Diana Taurasi of the Phoenix Mercury won Best WNBA Player.

• Ten-time world title winner Manny Pacquiao won Best Fighter.

• U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy won Best Male Golfer and Best Record-Breaking Performance.

• Two-time major winner Cristie Kerr won Best Female Golfer.

• Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams won Best Male and Best Female Tennis Player, respectively.

• Maya Moore, who helped UConn to two national women's basketball titles, won Best Female College Athlete.

• Snowboarder/skateboarder Shaun White won Best Male Action Sport Athlete.

• Four-time defending world surfing champion Stephanie Gilmore won Best Female Action Sport Athlete.

• Kentucky Derby winner John Velasquez was named Best Jockey.

• Paralympic gold medalist swimmer Mallory Weggemann won Best Female Athlete with a Disability.

• Australia's Jason Belmonte was named Best Bowler.

• Los Angeles Galaxy's Landon Donovan, the all-time leader in scoring and assists leader for Team USA, won Best MLS Player.

Throwbakk Thurday: Playa

Who remembers the 90's R&B Group PLAYA?

Cheers 2 U
 Playa's Debut Album

Shedding their choir robes for street clothes, the Louisville-based trio known as Playa stepped up to the plate with an R&B set that combined the power of gospel music with the more worldly melodies of contemporary R&B.

Smokey, Static and Black insisted their defection from religious to secular music is by no means a sellout. "We got no static from nobody in our families or at church," says Smokey. "At our core, we're still just as spiritual as we were before we started singing R&B. We consider what we're doing a profession and a job."

The performer's comments understate the group's fiery commitment to their artistic craft, as their resume bears out. Cheers 2 U, Playa's debut album, is by no means their entry into the realm of pop music; as songwriters, they wrote "Pony," the 1996 No. 1 R&B hit by Ginuwine. They also lent their background vocals to Timbaland & Magoo's hot 1997 track "Up Jump The Boogie." Playa, who've been together as a trio for nearly a decade, also previously worked with rap sensation Missy Elliott, the late female R&B vocalist Aaliyah and gospel veteran Al Green.

laya Playa- Cheers 2 U

What goes around comes around, so it's no coincidence that Cheers 2 U features guest appearances by Aaliyah and Timbaland " Magoo, as well as raptress Foxy Brown. "We took a nice amount of time with this album," reveals Static. "We been together for so long, that we knew what each other wanted for this album and worked hard to make that happen. And it was nice to have some of our friends helping to make the record possible."

Playa pushed their way into the big leagues by convincing a security guard who was familiar with their talent to let them backstage following a Jodeci concert in Louisville. There, they staged an impromptu audition for artist/ producer Devante Swing, who liked what he heard and told them to keep in touch.

And boy, did they keep in touch. "At first we were calling him all the time; we were really pestering him," remembers Black. "But as we kept sending him music, it got to the point where he was calling us as much as we were calling him."

Swing remained involved with his discovery, by including them on a collaborative effort called Da Bassment. Finally one day, when he felt the act was ready, Swing arranged for meeting between Playa and executives at hip-hop's cornerstone label, Def Jam, which ultimately signed the group to a deal on its imprint label, Def Soul.

The group is confident their music, which they describe as "Kentucky soul," will be accepted by fans across the country. "After all, we consider ourselves playas," Smokey boasts. "And for us, a playa is any person who is at the top of their game, whether it's on the basketball court, in business, or a recording career."

Worship Wednesday: God’s Will for Total Life Prosperity

Creflo Dollar

There is nothing humble or noble about being poor. In fact, poverty is a part of the curse that came upon mankind after Adam and Eve’s disobedience in the Garden of Eden. Ever since that point, man has had to toil in order to make it in life, and lack has been a reality. To make matters worse, there are people who actually believe that God uses poverty to teach people something, and that it is His will. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Poverty is not God’s will. He desires that we live full, abundant lives, with nothing missing, lacking, or broken. Getting an understanding of total life prosperity is critical.

Jesus came to this earth with a specific purpose—to redeem mankind from everything that fell under the curse. A curse is an empowerment to fail, and it never occurs independent of a specific cause. In the case of humanity, the curse of sin affected everyone and everything on the earth, including the quality of life that mankind was destined to live. Without Jesus, we would be doomed to a life of failure on earth and an eternity in hell after we die.

Fortunately, Jesus’ redemptive work on the cross of Calvary made provision for all who would receive Him as their Lord and Savior. This means where poverty once reigned, prosperity is now available for everyone who receives it by faith. Separation from God was the inevitable spiritual state of mankind prior to Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection, but through Him we have been brought back into fellowship with the Father. This means that everything He has belongs to us.

One of the major misconceptions people have about poverty is that it is limited to the financial realm. Webster’s Dictionary defines poverty as, “a chronic pressing need for money and material goods.” While poverty can be reflected in a shortage of finances and other material resources, its scope and impact isn’t limited to money by any means. The second definition, in Webster’s, paints the picture even further when it says, “inferior quality.” Poverty is just that—a substandard or inferior quality of life in any area.

A person can be poor or lacking in the area of health, relationships, or even where their emotions are concerned. There are so many areas into which poverty reaches its destructive claws that it becomes clear why Jesus said, “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” Jesus came to eradicate the effects of poverty! His mission is to provide abundant life for those who will believe and receive it.

Abundant life is actually the very life force of God, operating in and through us, affecting everything we come in contact with. It is the blessing in us and on us that enables us to be free from the curse of poverty. Many times, people are in poverty in some area of their lives and don’t know there is a way out. By receiving Jesus Christ, obeying the Word of God, and meditating on this important truth about abundant living, prosperity can become a reality. I’m not just talking about having a lot of money in the bank, even though God does want us to prosper financially. I’m talking about a quality of life that is marked by an overflow of peace, health, wholeness, and provision.

In 3 John 2, the apostle Paul talks about desiring that people prosper in their spirit, soul, and body. This simply means that prosperity encompasses the physical, spiritual, and emotional realms. If someone has a lot of money but is depressed and lonely all the time, he or she is simply a poor person with a big bank account. Or, if you are physically healthy but have bad relationships with your family and loved ones, you are a poor person with good health. To be truly prosperous, we must embrace the idea of total life prosperity. This is the will of God for all mankind, not just a select few. Jesus came to set us free from the curse of poverty so that we may live the abundant life. It is through our faith in the Word of God that this truth will become a reality in our lives.

Damon Dash Talks Jay-z & ‘Reasonable Doubt’: ‘I Said He Would Be The Greatest Rapper’

Jay-z and Dame Dash

Everyone remembers the good ole days when Jay and Dame Dash were tight and Rocafella Records was on the come up. The Duo eventually fell out, Jay became President of Def Jam and Dame Dash sold his stake in the company to Def Jam Recordings.

...in happier times.

On the 15th Anniversary of the release of ‘Reasonable Doubt’, Dame Dash sat down with VH1 and reflected back on the beginning of Jay-Z’s career, people labeling Jay as the worst rapper and why ‘Reasonable Doubt’ will always be Jay’s best album.

Because we believed in [Reasonable Doubt] so much, you couldn’t even tell me that it wasn’t going to be the best album that was ever made. It’s funny because it became that. Years later when you reflect, you’re like, you were so arrogant and everyone said you were a f*cking asshole because you were so arrogant but I was right.

I said ‘he will be the greatest rapper of all time’. I said that 15 years ago not to put it all on me. It was a lot of fighting. It was at a time when people told me he was the worst rapper. I had been shopping him and everyone told me he raps too fast so I said I’ll just do it myself. I always go back to that now. Once we got into business, other people made money off of what we did and we had partners. All we did was become a slave to their agendas and we didn’t even realize it. I just remembered being manipulated just because we were young. I remember certain little things that were done to manipulate…some worked and some didn’t. I’ve seen a lot of people that I care about get twisted. Those days were fun because I respected everybody 100% so it was unconditional love, no jade. I miss those days.

On his current business relationship with Jay-Z

No matter what, we’re still in business together because me, Biggs and Jay still own “Reasonable Doubt.” That was our independent record and that was the one I fought so hard to own and it’s the only one that still sells because it was that good, it was when we were pure. If it was coke, it was pure A1, grade A, uncut coke. The other ones were like, “we’re just trying to sell records”. That one was like, “I’m going to make an album and quit” and that was that. Alright, that was gangsta that will be the best one ever made’. We fought hard for that one; that was the one we fought the hardest for, so yeah, it’s the best.

 Biggs, Jay, and Dame

Jay-Z pegs ‘Reasonable Doubt’ as his ‘baby’. In an interview with XXL, he revealed that if he was given 100% ownership of the masters to ‘Reasonable Doubt’ he would have given up the rest of his masters, his position at Def Jam and Roc-a-fella Records.

Jay-Z

So I was like, let me get Reasonable Doubt and I’ll give up [the rest of] my masters. I’ll give up Roc-A-Fella Records, I’ll give up president and CEO of Def Jam Recordings—everything. Just give me my baby to hold on to so 10 years down the line, I can look back and I got something—I’m not empty-handed. And I was the one being offered everything. I thought it was more than fair… And when that was turned down, I had to make a choice. I’ll leave that for the people to say what choice they would’ve made. That’s about it. I don’t really wanna talk about Dame or Biggs. I don’t have nothing negative to say about them.

Tyler "Madea" Perry Reveals He Almost Became A "Baby Daddy"

Tyler Perry

In the latest issue of EBONY Magazine, Tyler Perry opens up about the three most impactful events in his life over the past few years. And he talks about a close encounter that almost made him a "baby daddy".

Tyler Perry covers the August 2011 "Black Wealth Issue" of EBONY where he reveals his definition of wealth saying,

"I've always been wealthy because I had a tremendous amount of love from my mother. She didn't have much, but she gave me Jesus."

Reflecting on his life, Tyler opened up about the 3 significant events in recent years that profoundly changed him. He said the first was that he turned 40 in September 2009. Then he lost his mother Willie Maxine Perry. And lastly, he appeared on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in December 2010 where he shared details about the sexual abuse he endured and the beatings/mental abuse by his father.

He added that he waited until his mother's passing before revealing the abuse.

"When my mother took her last breath, I was able to take my first because I would not be a source of pain for her as long as she was alive," he said. I didn't know how liberating it would be to sit in the pain of the moment, feel it, allow myself to squeeze it as hard as I could then let it go".

He also revealed that he is no longer angry at Spike Lee and will never be critical of him again.

Spike Lee

"Because I saw his children and forgot that the man has kids," he said. "I'm gonna be more respectful of him and his family". "I believe Spike can do what he does and I can do what I do. We both have a voice and very different experiences in life. There's room for more than one of us in every industry, and the moment we embrace that as a society, we can get past all this stuff".

Then Tyler dropped a bomb and revealed in the issue that he almost became a baby daddy:

"Back in December" he began "when we thought we were having a kid, I got overwhelmed. "We" (the interviewer asked) Is there a woman in your life? "Yeah" he responded--smiling yet no elaborating. He says, "she is really, really special. It's the longest relationship I've been in, largely because I don't feel any kind of marry-me-now pressure from her".

K'mon SON!!!

LaLa And Carmelo Anthony Draw Inspiration From Will and Jada Pinkett Smith

Carmelo Anthony and La La

Yesterday, Television host La La Anthony and her hubby Carmelo celebrated their one year anniversary as husband and wife. The couple sat down with the NY Times a few days prior, and discussed their relationship and business partnership as well as which couples they draw inspiration from, including Will and Jada Pinkett Smith. The comparisons are inevitable as Lala and Carmelo followed in the power couple’s footsteps and created a production company together in 2008, that has produced Lala’s Full Court Wedding, as well as the Mike Tyson Documentary ‘Tyson’ and an upcoming movie with Brett Ratner.

Lala on Will and Jada

I love Will Smith and Jada Pinkett! You see the love, and you can see the support, and they partner on things and produce together. But she has a life, and he has a life.

Will and Jada-Pinkett Smith

Carmelo on couples that inspire them

Will and Jada have a tremendous relationships, Jay-Z and Beyonce have a tremendous relationship, Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys, they’re a couple we see that inspires us. But we want to be ourselves. We want people to say, ‘We want our relationship to be like Melo and LaLa.’

Jay-Z and Beyonce

Lala On Wanting To Be More Than A ‘Basketball Wife’

A lot of times with basketball players, their wives, and I’m not criticizing, but their life is just about the man, what time is he getting home, why hasn’t he called me? But I’m so much more than” that. I’m a mom, I’m an actress, I’m a producer. Like, out of all that, I don’t want to just be called a basketball wife. What I see in Will Smith and Jada Pinkett, is having your own, and I tell everyone that.”

Carmelo on creating a business partnership

I saw her wanting to go into movies and producing films and documentaries and reality shows, So I said instead of letting somebody else come on board and produce all this stuff, we have the capabilities and the relationships, we can create our own production company and bring everything through that.
